Accidents are sudden and unfortunate occurrences for the injured. New York residents may have heard the news of a recent car accident that claimed one life and left several injured. A lifelong resident's regular visit to the nearby drug store resulted in a near death experience, but others were not so fortunate.
According to officials, an SUV driven by a 46-year-old hit another person's car from behind as that person was exiting the parking lot of a drug store. The SUV then turned into the eastbound lane and smashed into another vehicle. It then went on to hit five other vehicles on the main road.
The driver of the first vehicle hit by the SUV was lucky to escape without any injuries. However, the 82-year-old driver of the second vehicle that was hit succumbed to the injuries and died at the scene. A female passenger in the second vehicle was also seriously injured and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The ambulance service rescued several people who were trapped in their vehicles after the accident and they were also transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of the SUV was arrested by police and has been charged with driving while impaired by drugs. The person has also been charged for leaving the scene of the accident.
Car accidents are one of the major reasons of accidental deaths in New York. Driver inattentiveness and impairment due to alcohol and drugs are a leading cause of these accidents. Under New York law, the victim of a car accident can get compensation if the accident was caused by another person's negligence. The victims involved in this eight-vehicle crash may choose to file personal injury claims against the driver of the SUV.
Obtaining maximum and adequate compensation for the injuries suffered may involve many legal complexities. An attorney may guide the person through a proper investigation of the incident and may be helpful in taking into account the pain and suffering, medical expenses and lost wages when calculating the compensation claim.
